About Echoes of Incarceration
“Echoes’ approach to each film varies but the process always starts with group conversations, introspecting, free-writing and research. The crew always asks “what film could we make that a group of professional journalists of filmmakers could not?” The answer is usually some combination of harnessing the lived experience of the crew, putting themselves both in front of and behind the camera, engaging with peers and communities, as well as interviewing national experts in personal and innovative ways. Our films also involve a level of playfulness and humor, with the idea of both disarming audiences and weaving some of the unpredictable, lively energy of emerging adulthood into the fabric of the film. In that sense, we always try to embody the phrase “the medium is the message.” Our films seek to model the kind of resilience, creativity, humanity - and the occasional lapses of maturity - that we want the audiences to recognize when they make decisions about justice-involved young people.” - Jeremy Robins, Project Director
