“The Felony ATI Court: Manhattan and Beyond,” is an invitation-only, half-day, in-person event, hosted by the Center for Justice Innovation and Columbia University Justice Lab and featuring New York County Supreme Court, Criminal Term Administrative Judge Ellen Biben, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, and Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan among other speakers. With support from Arnold Ventures, the event will discuss the Manhattan Felony Alternative to Incarceration Court, an initiative of New York County Supreme Court. This problem-solving court expands on the principles of specialized drug and mental health courts to offer alternatives to incarceration for all types of felony cases, including violent offenses.
This intimate event will bring together diverse perspectives—judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, academics, policymakers, government officials, advocates, and clinicians involved with day-to-day implementation of the Felony ATI Court—to analyze this pioneering approach and its implications for reform efforts in New York City and beyond. We will also explore the opportunities and challenges of the ATI Court, including efforts to develop a special track for emerging adults, and the critical role that this model can play in addressing mass incarceration and enhancing public safety.
